From YouTuber My Castaway Blues: We make a return visit to one of our favorite destinations, the Sacramento - San Joaquin Delta, to explore the ruins and remaining right-of-way of the abandoned (mostly) Sacramento Northern Railway. This unique railroad, once powered entirely by electricity, had an interesting history, carrying both passenger and freight between California's capitol city of Sacramento and Oakland in the San Francisco Bay. Along the route the right-of-way ran atop the levees of the Sacramento River, through the vast, flat farmland of the Delta Country, and then ferried across Suisun Bay, east of San Francisco Bay. The demise of the Sacramento Northern Railway was a result of the quickly changing transportation dynamics of the era, with the building of new roads and influx of cars and trucks facilitating a more efficient and cost-effective alternative to transportation by rail. At the same time, agricultural processing plants became old and outdated, with many of the operations being shuttered and located elsewhere.
